Key features of Liferay Portal are:

  • Enterprise content management:
    • Web publishing (asset publishing). Liferay’s functionality includes a wide range of content management features, which allow users to create new materials quickly through user friendly interface. In this case the term content includes site, web page or its part. While creating content, Liferay enables to use ready templates, set up publishing or deleting content according to the time planned and define, what users approve content before publishing. Liferay enables creation of functional web pages, combining web content with portlets and graphic elements and also assigning permissions to the users depending on their roles.
    • Documents and images management – documents library and image gallery allow users to store their material, index it with tags, block it, search and use on web pages, as well as download for using outside the system. Moreover, documents can be stored in the cloud instead of PC, this makes document exchange among employees easier and reduces the risks of losing documents due to computer breakdowns.
    • Website management tools, e.g. page navigation, moving portlets across pages using Drag-and-Drop feature, site map, page rating, integration with MS Office, publisher, dynamic tags, creating web page templates.
  • Collaborative work and social services:
    • Wiki is the easiest way for decentralizing description of information which allows users to combine their efforts in writing articles quickly. All communities and organizations within portal have their own set of wiki pages with their own access permissions. Every user, being member of a community or organization and having rights for editing, can contribute in writing the article, which they find important, interesting or concerning which they have got information, that may interest others.
    • Knowledge base – articles from knowledge base are more structured than wiki-pages, but less formal for creating and editing, than standard processes of information description.
    • Activity monitoring – portal offers monitoring everything that happens in blogs, forums and wiki, as well as different applications. Information is available in “Activity” portlets, as well as on the “Timeline”, like in wellknown social media.
    • Chats – using chat, which is always located on the bottom of the screen and therefore not disturbing, users can easily see other users who are online and can send them a short text message.
    • Forums are useful for speeding up the discussions of common ideas within departments or project teams, or for getting and publishing information inside the working team. Liferay enables statistics monitoring concerning message views and recent comments. Users can subscribe to comments via RSS and reply by email.
    • Emails – to send an email you don’t need to leave the portal. Portal has a full version of mail client with user friendly interface based on AJAX and it can be configured with lots of popular IMAP mail servers.
    • Shared calendar – events may be common for several communities. Reminders can be send via email, short message services or SMS. Popular protocols support allows calendar information exchange with other systems.
    • Blogs (diaries) - in Liferay users can both have personal blogs (on their own personal page), and publish posts (if they have access) to company’s blog updating company news items by this. Blog management includes convenient text editor, bookmark tool, email notifications about replies in blogs and rating system. All blogs are available for subscribing via RSS.
    • Alerts and announcements on portals enables newsletters to different groups of users, starting from simple announcements and finishing with multipurpose informational letters. Each user can set the preferable way of receiving messages: notifications on portal, via SMS, email or by another way, which can be set up by portal’s administrator.
    • RSS enables subscribing to the most viewed messages from forums and blogs in portal.
    • Voting and polls - administrator of the community or organization within the portal can create polls for other people’s opinions of the community via voting. You can create several polls with different questions at the same time. Poll’s results are available in graphics.
    • Social capital – function, which contributes development of dynamic system of social values, measuring contribution and participation of each user and informational asset’s value. User can increase social capital through activity in the community, such as adding information (posting to blogs, wiki), commenting and viewing content.
  • Simple integration with related systems:
    • Enterprise content management - Alfresco;
    • Data analysis and reports: - Pentaho and JasperReports;
    • Business process management - Intalio BPMS and Bonita BPMS.
  • Support of all well-known application servers and data bases;
  • Advanced search. Users can search information both on the whole portal, and in separate communities and modules, such as wiki, forums and others. Apart from built-in search engine, portal can integrate with external search servers, such as  Amazon OpenSearch and SOLR. Other services can be easily added.
  • Core portlets. Liferay comes with plenty of preinstalled portlets and even a bigger base of free portlets from developers community, which allows creating even the most complicated portals on their base really quickly. At the moment there are more than 60 core portlets, ready for use right after installation.
